Great radio for the moneyThis is a great radio for the money, if you're starting out in an amateur radio hobby it's worth every penny.
As AdvertisedIt is compact, portable and works exactly as it should. Which includes being complicated, sorry, and you do need to program it and a license is highly recommended. This is not plug and play, so don’t expect that. Battery life is above expectations. Apparently it may be weather proof. News to me, but I won’t be testing that feature unless necessary. This is a necessity for emergency situations and S&R, and a safety blanket when hiking/camping.
It Works! That is all I have to say.It just works! The interface is not that straight forward, and definitely uncomparable to big brand radios, but it can get you started. I would suggest every ham get one just for the hack of it, it is 30 bucks, not 300 bucks. I used it with a mag mount dual band antenna on the car roof, it comes into the repeater with no significant difference from Kenwood TM71a.73!
This is good.I love my scanner. It works great. Very sturdy. Even throwing it didnt break it and it still works.
I definitely recommend this radio if you have any interest in GMRS or ham. This was purchased to be my entry level ham and to also use as a scanner. Programming went well with CHIRP (slight learning curve), usage works decent out of the box as a receiver (not a transmitter, more on that in a bit), and I've been interested in amature radio for a long time but the cost of entry has always been daunting until I came across this little guy.As for programming it was simple enough using the built in menu after some internet research. I then purchased a programming cable and downloaded CHIRP and it opened up a entire new level of setting things up. I also had to reference the internet some while programming with CHIRP but it was fairly simple.Second, this radio out of the box makes a much better receiver than transmitter. It didn't take long to purchase an antenna upgrade that allowed me to hit two repeaters in the two neighboring city's since my town doesn't have a tower. I definitely recommend upgrading the antenna as a first thing with the radio. For the price of this radio you can't go wrong. If you are interested in ham or GMRS then I definitely recommend this radio as a great low cost starting point. Just remember that both GMRS and ham both require a license to broadcast for each.
Not AM CB radio. This is an FM only radio. If you need one for trucks go for AM CB radio. They use 40 channels. This use 21 on FM
Keeping informed during an emergencyGood little radio to take backpacking or camping
